April 6, 2007, "We are Stardust"
This past week I had the opportunity to view the planetarium and the Cosmic Collision exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. My two year old son, Jacob, was taking a walk through the Butterfly exhibit with his grandmother and aunt. I was unable to go with because there were only two tickets left for the Butterfly showing. This left me with a little time on my hands to explore a museum I hadn't been through in quite a long while.
This was positively one of the most breathtaking spiritual experiences I have had. If you ever find yourself feeling uninspired or without awe of your existence, just take a trip to your local planetarium to refresh your memory about the grandeur of it all. "We are Stardust" was one of the exhibits. Every bit of our body and physical world is of the stars. We come from the helium and hydrogen atoms of an exploding sun. These are my words trying to rephrase what I read. But you get the picture. Not only that, but we are part of something much bigger and how easy it is to forget that. Just do it. Look up at the stars. Study them and get to know our bigger neighborhood. Allow yourself to dream about reality and life and be inspired by the Light of our Sun, the giver of life on our planet.
I plan to go back for another visit soon. Here is a link to the museum: www.amnh.org
A beautiful mantra that says it all:
I am a star.
A star is a heavenly body, radiating light.
I am a heavenly body, radiating light.
I am a star.
